What is Kalyug?

In Hinduism, Kalyug is the fourth and final stage of a cosmic cycle. It is the current age we are living in the cosmic cycle. 

Kalyug is believed to be the worst of all 4 yugas. In Kalyug, we see moral decline, the twisting of Dharma according to need, being greedy is considered good, money is the only measure of success, and many other things. 

However, many religious leaders pointed out, it is a great yug. They pointed out, You can find God and moksha by doing a little effort. A normal mantra chanting, doing good deeds will balance your karma.

When Kalyug Started?

According to Puranic Sources, Kalyug began on February 17/18, 3102 BCE. It is the day Lord Krishna died. Lord Krishna’s demise is linked to the transition phase from Dwapar Yug to Kalyug. The decline in dharma and increase in adharma is a sign of Kalyug initial phase. 

Another anecdote says demon Kali emerged from hiding after the death of Lord Krishna. He tried to enter Hastinapur but King Parikshit refused. Later, Kali convinced him to be in the city and allow him to roam in certain places. These places were bars, slaughter houses, and casinos. 

However, Kali’s influence was unmissable. His influence makes the king do evil things. The entire kingdom was affected and it led to the rise of Kali. 

Another story shows the catastrophic storm that destroyed Dwarika. It is believed that Earth was hit by a 7-day storm after Lord Krishna left the Earth. This incident is also mentioned in ancient Babylonian and Mayan records.

In which year Kalyug will end​

While Puranas and other religious scriptures give us an insight into our mythical history, it also has some predictions about the future. The calculations in these puranas are debatable. However, it is believed that Kalyug’s lifespan in the cosmic cycle is about 432,000 years. 

In this 1200 divine years, we get the main period of Kalyug and two twilight phases as well. The main period will have 360,000 years (1000 divine years). Two twilight phases last for 36,000 years (100 divine years).
