The Story Behind Guru Purnima

The day honours when Lord Shiva was identified as the first-ever Guru, or Adi Guru according to the Yogic ritual.

The story of Guru Purnima has been popular for thousands of years. A muscular and calm yogi was noticed in deep meditation in the Himalayas. He was sitting unmoving.

Many people came and went, but only seven men remained there. These men were interested to learn from him. One day, the yogi opened his eyes. A man respectfully asked him to teach them. But he did not respond.

All the seven men still patiently waited to open his eyes again for 84 years. But when the yogi finally opened his eyes again and came out of his meditation state. He saw their dedication and excitement for learning from him.

The Yogi decided to share his knowledge with them on a full moon night. He became the Adi Guru (the first teacher), and they became the Saptarishis (seven sages).

This moment is further known as Guru Purnima. It became a day when students honour their teachers and spiritual guides.

The guru is not someone who holds the light for you, but someone who helps you find the light within yourself.Sadhguru

The story gives us a reminder that there should be a real dedication to learning in disciples for the right knowledge and guidance.
