Chaitra Navratri, also known as Vasant Navratri, marks the Hindu New Year and the arrival of spring. It is celebrated for 9 days and people worship the nine forms of Goddess Durga during this time. According to hindu panchang calendar, there are 4 Navratris. And Chaitra Navratri is one of these. Whereas, on the ninth day of this festival, people celebrate Ram Navami which is dedicated to the celebration of Lord Rama’s birth. When is Chaitra Navratri in 2024?

This year Chaitra Navratri will start from 9 April 2024 to 17 April 2024. However, it begins on the Pratipada tithi of Shukla Paksha in the month of Chaitra every year. 

Pratipada tithi starts; 8 April 2024 at 11:50 PM

Pratipada tithi ends; 9 April 2024 at 8:30 PM 

As a result, Chaitra Navratri will be held on 9 April 2024. So, you can start doing Kalash Sthapana on this day. But, what is Kalash Sthapana? Let’s understand.

Kalash Sthapana is an important ritual in Chaitra Navratri, which is performed on the first day of Navratri. This is done to invoke auspiciousness and the blessings of the Goddess. Some people also call it Ghatasthapana. It is established during an auspicious muhurat on Chaitra Navratri

Kalash Sthapana in Chaitra Navratri 2024

As you’ve already read above, Kalash Sthapana or Ghatasthapana is done on the first day of Chaitra Navratri. So, this year the auspicious muhurat for this ritual is 6:02 AM to 10:16 PM. 

However, if you are unable to do this during the morning, then there is an alternative time too. It states that you can perform this ritual at 11:57 AM to 12:48 pM too. Moreover, let’s see what are the elements you need for this ritual. 

Elements Needed For Ghatasthapana:

Below mentioned is a list of things required for Ghatasthapana. These include; 

  • Use a Kalash or clay pot. 
  • Add 7 seeds of 
  • Seven different grains. 
  • Pure soil to sow these grains
  • Use a Clay or brass jar
  • Moli
  • perfume/scent
  • Supari
  • Akshat (raw or unbroken rice)
  • Unpeeled Coconut
  • Red cloth
  • Garlands 
  • Grass 

Kalash installation in Chaitra Navratri:

Kalash Sthapana is an important ritual in Chaitra Navratri, which is performed on the first day of Navratri. This is done to get the blessings of the Goddess.

Here are Some Important Points to Remember for Kalash Sthapana:

  • Preparation of Kalash: Take a Kalash (pitcher) made of clay or metal and pour holy water of Ganga, mango leaves, mauli and roli. A coconut is placed on top of the Kalash, which is tied with Kalava.
  • Installation method: The Kalash is installed on a pedestal facing east or north. A pavilion is built around the Kalash and barley is sown in it. The Kalash is decorated with puja items like flowers, fruits, incense and lamps.
  • Chanting of mantras: Pandit or any knowledgeable person worships the Kalash while chanting mantras. Goddess Durga is invoked through mantras and she is requested to reside in the Kalash.
  • Importance of Puja: It is believed that the installation of Kalash brings positive energy into the house and drives away evil forces. The Kalash is worshiped regularly throughout Navratri and the Kalash is immersed on the last day of Navratri.
