A well-known tale linked to Nag Panchami tells the story of a farmer and a serpent. You will find it completely mysterious, magical, and a lesson of kindness.

A thousand years back, there was a farmer who used to live with his wife, two sons, and a daughter.

One day, he was ploughing his field and killed three baby snakes unknowingly. Then, the mother of those baby snakes, the Naagin (female serpent), was extremely sad and thinking of taking revenge.

Same night, she went to the farmer’s place to kill his family. She bit and killed the farmer, his wife, and their two sons. But his daughter still remained.

Then, she came to bite his daughter the next morning. But the daughter offered a bowl of milk to the Naagin and requested forgiveness. The naagin got emotional and melted after seeing that little girl’s kindness. And, the whole family came back to life again.

This all happened on the Panchami Tithi of Shukla Paksha in Shravan Maas, and since then, Naga Panchami is celebrated to honour and please the serpent gods.

2. Takshak and the Snake Sacrifice

The snake king Takshak kills King Parikshit in the Mahabharata. His son, Janamejaya, got furious and did a Yagna (fire ritual) to kill all snakes.

Astika Rishi (a wise sage) stopped the Yagna and saved the Naga clan. This courageous act is remembered on Naga Panchami.

3. Krishna and Kaliya Nag
